  • Cast and Calm
Young person fishing calmly by a lake promoting Oakwood Education's Cast and Calm program.

Our Mission

Cast and Calm is a specialist alternative provision programme that combines angling, therapeutic support, and accredited learning to help young people thrive outside of traditional classroom settings.

Led by an experienced care professional with an Angling coach qualification, the programme uses fishing as a powerful tool to support emotional wellbeing, confidence, and personal growth.

We work with young people who may be experiencing:

  • Mental health challenges
  • Trauma or emotional difficulties
  • ADHD or ASD
  • EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance)

Through calm outdoor environments and personalised support, learners develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, self-awareness, and a stronger sense of connection and purpose.

Our trauma-informed and strength-based approach focuses on each young person’s individual needs, helping them feel safe, supported, and empowered to succeed.

Accredited Learning Opportunities

Cast and Calm can be delivered through the AQA Unit Award Scheme, allowing learners to gain recognised achievements at their own pace. Units include:

  • Introduction to Fishing & Fish Handling
  • Basic Fishing Skills
  • Fishing: Casting

The programme offers more than just learning to fish, it provides therapeutic support, meaningful engagement, accredited achievement, and opportunities to build lifelong skills in a positive and inclusive environment.
